It’s important that an investor understands thoroughly what a leveraged ETF has to offer in terms of investment. There are benefits and drawbacks to consider, which eventually determines your investment portfolio.

Volume in leveraged ETFs has been constant with more traders pouring in to these instruments for proficient plan implementation. In spite of the benefits and increase in leveraged ETFs, there are some gentle drawbacks that traders should be attentive to as they decide on strategies.Your browser may not support display of this image.

Leveraged ETFs signify positions in the market that would usually involve margin. Leveraged and short positions produce costs. Although, the outlay the ETF acquires are little comparative to the operating costs produced by employing margin in a retail brokerage report, they are still an extra cost.

As the ETF is rebalanced everyday, it does not have the benefit of the compounding, which an absolute long position on the SPY does over the extended period.

Over the long term, a leveraged or short ETF would under-perform which is expected with compounding, which is more distinct during times of high instability and is less of a concern during lower market instability.

Investors should seek to know whether these shortcomings are blocking these instruments as a tactical device. Every investment has flipsides and benefits which should be measured and weighed. Leveraged and short ETFs can prove to be a capable strategy for short period revelation to the bearish side of the market, while longer period exposure to the disadvantage of the market during times of high market instability may be better achieved with long tenure puts or put LEAPs.

An investor must keep in mind that there are no short-cuts or easy lane to making money in the market. It is typically a matter of discovering the right instrument for the right prospect. Knowing what options are at hand will assist you make the right decision for your collection and planned goals. So, take a deeper look at ETFs and start investing!
